We celebrate Mother’s Day on May 12th with our calendar artwork for May. Through art nouveau influences and psychedelic styles, studio artists Nanette Newbry and Beibei An pay honor to the nurturing and empowering influence of motherhood. The artwork was inspired by Bob Fried’s rock concert posters created during San Francisco’s Summer of Love in the 1960s.
In 1967 Bob Fried began poster work for the Family Dog, an eclectic group founded by Chet Helms who promoted some of the greatest rock events of all time in San Francisco. Trained at Cooper Union in New York, Fried worked as a commercial artist before moving to San Francisco and enrolling in the master’s program at San Francisco State. Fried’s style incorporated draftsmanship and elements from Oriental art, pop art and geometric designs to replicate the psychedelic experience.
The wavy lines, shocking pink and orange colors evoke the energy of woman.
This artwork is one of a series from our 2019 Flashback calendar and was created in our drug-free studios in Carlsbad, California.
