Debra Simpson, a web expert who specializes in creating social media platforms for speakers and writers, has rebranded her company. For the past few years, Simpson maintained four URLs that served different aspects of her business. Recently, she shifted from four to one central website, DebraSimpson.com. To create recognition for her new identity, Studio 2055 was approached to design the logo and website header.
During the initial stages of research with Simpson, our creative team posed the option of creating a caricature for her logo. Simpson shares, “The caricature was a complete surprise. I think it fits perfectly and I love that it’s ‘timeless.’ In my industry–Internet technology–my age can work against me. The caricature camouflages my age and the way the designers positioned the image, only part of the caricature’s face is visible. In my opinion, it was a stroke of genius. The new image appeals to my target market and reinforces how comfortable I am to work with in this fast-paced, technology-driven marketing arena.”
Using caricatures has been shown to be scientifically beneficial. Studies show that caricatured images of familiar faces are recognized with equivalent accuracy in less time than photographic images of the same face. Caricatures also attract attention by standing out as a unique feature. Exaggerated expressions, colors and positioning can relate a thousand words and show a sense of humor. Most importantly, they entertain. A caricature used in a company’s promotional material can be used to convey its message in a humorous yet memorable way.
