Inspired by the wild creativity of the San Francisco music scene in the 1960s, we pay homage to this short-lived creative explosion with a series of artwork that reflects art nouveau influences and psychedelic styles of the time. Studio artists Nanette Newbry and Beibei An have interpreted monthly themes in the spirit of this artistic movement.
Our February tribute goes to Alton Kelley and Stanley “Mouse,” a member of the original Family Dog and designer of handbills for their first concerts. He collaborated with artist Stanley Mouse Miller to design posters for Chet Helms, owner of the Family Dog dance concerts held in 1966. Though Kelley had no formal training, he and Mouse under the Mouse Studios banner, created many of the San Francisco concert posters that defined the poster period from 1966 to 1968. Stanley Mouse was an accomplished cartoonist from Detroit who began doing hotrod cartoons reminiscent of Ed Big Daddy Roth’s automobile art. Mouse brought to the partnership a sense of fun and expert illustration and lettering techniques that made the Mouse Studios output distinctive and appealing.
