San Diego’s Job Options, Inc. (JOI), has for the past 28 years focused on placing disabled and non-disabled workers in government and commercial businesses. Job Options has been a valued client of Comet Creative for the past 10 years, creating brochures, annual reports and other marketing materials to support its mission: to employ those who otherwise might not find meaningful employment along with a living wage.
With the concept “Interconnected Through Our Work,” this year’s annual report showcases three award-winning JOI employees. The first is Yolanda Richardson, who has worked at San Diego’s Balboa Naval Hospital for the past five years. She has been honored with the prestigious William M. Usdane Award, presented each year to an exemplary disabled employee. Additionally, Job Options’ Doug Baker, Director of Food Services at Camp Pendleton, was also singled out with a Management Excellence Award presented by SourceAmerica. The annual has highlighted these two honorees along with Dylan Prettyman and Elizabeth Coss in this year’s 2014 annual report. As JOI company CEO Jeff Johnson noted, “Our employees take tremendous pride in their performance and know the value of their work. The quality of Comet Creative’s design reflects the quality of our people.”
It’s our privilege to have total creative license with the annual. We develop the concept and run our ideas past Jeff for approval. We interview JOI employees, write the content and design the piece. Rachel Kim, one of our graphic designers, illustrated the cover depicting Yolanda interacting with hospital personnel. Our photographer Richard Dowdy took the photos. Taking photos at JOI work locations is no easy task. There are security clearances and many limitations due to the sensitive nature of the environment. Oftentimes there are patients and military personnel who cannot be photographed. So we have to work very fast using minimal equipment. Yolanda’s profile photography was done at the Wounded Warriors building of the hospital, while Doug and Dylan were photographed at a mess hall deep inside Camp Pendleton where soldiers are training.
For more than 25 years, Comet Creative has designed and published annual reports for companies and nonprofits who wish to report their financials and yearly accomplishments to their stakeholders. To view our complete portfolio, visit us at WeAreComet.com.
