On May 8, Comet Creative partnered with the San Diego AMA as a sponsor for the 17th annual Cause Conference. It was hugely successful for the chapter while the 175 attendees listened to the keynote Jay Ferro from the American Cancer Society (ACS). His personal experience is so compelling—talking about why he left a high-paying, corporate position to work at ACS. His wife died of cancer a number of years ago leaving him to raise his two young sons. The act of storytelling is at the core of his life’s decision to promote the work at ACS. Scherazade Daruvalla King, a digital media expert, and Karen Hunte, Executive Director of Taproot Foundation, rounded out the speakers for the event.
Restore, Recycle, Repurpose
Coincidently, the concept of our booth and collateral was all about telling a story. As branding experts, we know that stories humanize a company’s products and services thus making real connections to customers, emotionally and intellectually.
To get us ready for the conference, we had a brainstorming get-together to nail down the items we needed for the event. As Comet Creative co-owner Richard was clearing out hundreds of books (that he has actually read), we were inspired to put his vintage books to good use. One of our core values at the Studio is to reclaim and recycle, so we put that value into action.
We Still Like to Make Things with our Hands
Besides our branding and digital marketing skills, everyone at the Studio has original artistic talent. These traits really set us apart from many other agencies. Rachel and myself are fine artists while Tara has fantastic display skills having worked at Anthropologie. By far Rob and Melissa’s dexterity produced the best paper cylinders. Check out the slide show. First, we looked through hundreds of books and selected very specific pages for the background. These materials told of a time gone by–drawings of photography instructions and illustrations from 1960s advertising campaigns. The three-dimensional, cylindrical shapes were shaped and attached to give the display texture and form. We made stencils of our logo and used spray paint in the Studio’s colors to pull the background and the logo together. Viola! Simple, beautiful and effective. See our workspace and process.
Thanks to all the great AMA volunteers and to Comet Creative’s terrific designers.
