Let me forget about today until tomorrow.
—Bob Dylan
It was 1965 and the times were changing. Hordes of middle-class kids, seeking a vibrant, creative alternative to their stifling suburban lives, converged on San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district where they found multi-roomed Victorian homes and cheap rent.
Within the Haight, an emerging band of musicians, pushed by the British Invasion of the Beatles, threw off the stagnant American rock/pop matrix and created a new sound: psychedelic rock that combined folk, rock and jazz influences.
Within this cultural Mixmaster, the music that was being made nurtured a small industry of artists who created posters for local dance concerts. These artists elevated traditional posters to new levels, combining art nouveau influences and mind-bending, psychedelic images.
Comet Creative pays homage to this short-lived creative explosion by producing a calendar that reflects the style that originated in San Francisco. Studio artists Nanette Newbry and Beibei An have interpreted monthly themes in the spirit of this artistic movement.
